Did you know that it was in the early 1900’s that that idea of a “motorised caravan” was first considered but it is not until you jump to the 1950s that the true birth of the campervan market started, probably in thanks to the VW Microbus and in the 1956 the very well known Dormbile made its first appearance.
Through the 1960s the industry developed with new ideas that came and went as to what a campervan should look like with more and more converters being developed by manufacturers
In the early 1970s the popularity of campervans escalated and a new model from Fiat appeared on the market to great success as despite its small size it had a kitchen amongst other features and there was also an opportunity to have one with extending side tents!
However, the sector then found it difficult at the end of 1970s and into the 1980s with a faltering economy and the sad demise of some of the brands including Dormobile.
The market began to improve at the end of the decade when the VW T3 became popular and new models were introduced to the market with new and improve features including hot-water systems, mains power, fitted fridges and full cookers.
Jump forward to today and you will never fail to notice the number of campervans seen as many discover their dream of living a “van life” to be able to escape at a moment’s notice to enjoy places far and wide without the restrictions of flights, trains or hotel bookings.
Then, of course following the covid pandemic we were all wanting to get back to travelling but in our own safe space, which fuelled an increase in many wanting to discover and enjoy the benefits of having their very own campervan and the lifestyle it can provide. Creating a demand for campervans and motorhomes which continues today.
So now as we come to the end of 2023 thoughts turn to what the demand for campervans will be in in the next 12 months. Different from regular motor vehicles campervans do in fact hold their value well if they have been loved and cared for (hence why when you purchase from Goodmans Motorhomes you know they vehicles has been a thorough habitation check).
Sadly, supply chain issues for manufacturers are showing that the availability of new vehicles may lessen in 2024 however the used campervan remains healthy. Again, here at Goodmans we always offer a wide variety of used campervans suitable for all requirements and regularly as soon as we stock them, they are sold!
Which clearly demonstrates that their popularity continues, and we are able to enable our customers the ability to explore and enjoy that van life adventure they have always wished for.
