Motorhome Adventures in Europe – The Paperwork and the Practicalities

Travelling to Europe in your motorhome?

Of course, the fun bit is the planning your route, the countries and places you want to see whilst enjoying the benefits of motorhome living. Yet it goes without saying that you must also manage the practicalities and paperwork that need to be taken into consideration as well.

Making sure you have in place or aware of these key factors before you depart will enable you to truly enjoy your adventures.

How Long Can I Travel Around Europe?

You will be more than aware that since Brexit residents in the UK can only stay in the Schengen Area (European zone where countries have no internal borders and allow free movement of people) for 90 days within a period of 180 days.

Passport: At your date of departure your passport must have at least three months left before expiry date, but it should also be no longer than 10 years.

Visa: It has been recently confirmed that from mid 2025 UK travellers will need to pay a 7 Euros (£6) via waiver to visit most EU countries. This visa-waiver will apply to countries in the Schengen Area.

Driving Licence: A full UK driving license is necessary for touring in Europe by campervan or motorhome. If you still have a paper driving licence or a licence issued in Gibraltar, Guernsey, Jersey or the Isle of Man then you will need an International Driving Permit.

Insurance: It is necessary to have motorhome insurance for your vehicle, however it is no longer necessary to have a green card for travelling in the EU but if you are planning to visit non-EU countries you may require additional coverage with a green card so, please do make you do your homework first.

Travel Insurance: It goes without that you will need travel insurance however it is important to make sure you start your policy (unless already existent policy) at the time you book your ferry or train to ensure you are covered for cancellations etc. Always check what you are covered for at time of booking.

Whether you are travelling by motorhome or simply enjoying a package holiday, it is beneficial but not a legal requirement for all UK residents to get GHIC (Global Health Insurance Card) which can be obtained from the NHS.

UK or GB Sticker: It is now necessary and a legal requirement to show a UK sticker on the rear of your vehicle. This replaces a GB sticker, unless you have a UK number plate which displays the Union Jack flag. Please note if you travel to Spain, you will need a UK sticker even if you have the new style UK number plates.

Pets: Planning to take your pets with you on your motorhome adventure? Then it is necessary ensure you have an Animal Health Certificate and that you follow the legal requirements or taking animals into the EU.

Stocking Up: When we use our motorhomes in the UK, we are used to stocking up on the food essentials before we leave however when travelling into the EU there are many products that are no allowed so please do your research beforehand. Find out more.

Water & Waste: You will probably find that it is easier to dispose of your waste hygienically when you travel in Europe as there are plenty of waste disposal points at motorway services, along with fresh water taps available to motorhome users.  This is especially important if you are not staying on campsites. But also make sure you have euro coins to hand for some service facilities.

Gas/ LPG:  This is easily available in Europe however you might find that the connections are different so if you are planning a longer trip it may be necessary to invest in different hose connections.  Alternatively use a refillable gas system as this works out more economically better as well as much less hassle.

For any help, advice or spare parts for your motorhome then we are here to help.

In the meantime, we wish you many miles of fun and adventures in your motorhome.
